Rabbit + Cocoon:
Gold Coast Venue Review

Rabbit + Cocoon

23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami, Queensland, Australia

Some consider Queensland’s Gold Coast to be a cultural void. Sometimes, walking the streets of tacky tourist hub, Surfers Paradise, I do share the sentiment. But then I notice the cracks in the pavement. I see the small, delicate flower blooming forth. I lean into the cracks and venture beyond the superficial façade of this bustling, botoxed, leopard-printed city and I find it. It’s here. Richness. Diversity. Creativity. Innovation. Flavour. Colour. And the big C-word: Community.

Rabbit + Cocoon is the place where all of these elements come together. Tucked just off the Gold Coast Highway in Miami, it’s the Gold Coast’s first real cultural precinct. A place for the community to gather, share, create and celebrate. What was once a hidden gem now attracts a host of Gold Coast locals from all walks on life on a regular basis. The ethos is simple, create a place for local creative folk and punters alike to connect and create while being entertained and inspired all in a relaxed and funky atmosphere.

Rabbit + Cocoon is a family friendly precinct and arts/music venue consisting of creative workshop spaces, recording and design studios, co-working labs, rehearsal spaces, photography studios, a coffee hub ‘The Shed’ and numerous galleries. It’s also home to the Gold Coast’s first independent progressive radio station, Rabbit Radio. Every week Rabbit + Cocoon hosts free events for all ages including artist markets and street food markets, as well as regularly featuring live local music and big name touring artists.

Rabbit + Cocoon is fast becoming recognised as one of the best live music venues on the Gold Coast. It’s spacious and designed beautifully with a blend of grungy industrial street arts, fairy lights, flowers, rustic vintage decor and bright colours. At every event there’s always a swag of tasty street food stalls ready to satisfy any appetite. The bar offers local boutique brews as well as gorgeous cocktails and all the old favourites, while the The Shed café serves seriously good coffee. Gigs can be held indoors inside the spacious pallet-walled dessert hall or in the huge undercover outdoor promenade where stages can be set up at both ends.

One thing I notice about Rabbit + Cocoon is that even when an event is sold out or the market is bustling, there is always room to move. The vibe is friendly and vivacious without fail. Smiles abound beneath the glittering rooftop and the sound quality is always great. The venue has already seen the likes of Ngaiire, Katchafire and Ash Grunwald, and will soon play host to exciting headliners such as The Cat Empire, Sticky Fingers and many more. Suddenly, thanks to this venue the Gold Coast is becoming a place worthy of visiting on your world tour.

Aside from holding world-class live music events, Rabbit + Cocoon is also the venue for the incredibly popular Marketta Street Food, held every Saturday evening. Marketta Street Food is a bubbling, steaming, sizzling and delicious market where punters cruise, shoulder to smiling shoulder through a seemingly endless selection of street food stalls from all over the world before retiring to the dessert hall for a quick gelato or sidling over to the bar for some local brew. You can grab a quick snack or enjoy an entire international degustation – the choice is yours. There’s always great live entertainment, and the ever-present happy and family friendly atmosphere.

Twice a month you can come down to Rabbit + Cocoon and check out the Miami Marketta. This is a brilliant showcase of quality locally produced products including art, photography, fashion, jewellery, homewares, furnishings and yes, more food. Again, there’s always live entertainment, food stalls and a friendly bar. Here you can connect with local artists and musicians, source some amazing products and really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere as well as taking advantage of the chance to meet new people and generally feel inspired.

This place has vision — in a city where once the creative community seemed obscure, spread out or hard to find. Now, there is a home for the flourishing cultural, culinary, musical and artistic identity of the Gold Coast. Rabbit + Cocoon is a joyous hub, a hive of buzzing creativity and the birthplace of endless new projects and inspiration.

Mojo invites you to connect with this thriving new space and check out what’s up and coming as well as exploring all Rabbit + Cocoon has to offer.

The Vision:

“At Rabbit+Cocoon our vision was simple: to build a strong cultural identity for the Gold Coast, and to put our city and our people on the world map. We wanted to foster a community of creative stimulation and social inclusion.

We listened to the voices of our community. You told us you wanted a place where you can be inspired, where you can meet artists, where you can get feedback for your idea or project, where you will receive industry/peer support for your new arts business. You craved a local hotspot to be able to hear live music, watch performances and film screenings, to take part in workshops and free programs.

We host creative, social and educational projects that encourage active participation between the creative community and the wider public. We are open to collaborating with people and organisations who align with our ethos to grow a sustainable and vibrant culture sector for Gold Coast locals and visitors to enjoy.”
